Marked on Base Plug: No.5 MK 1, Elmbank Foundry, Glasgow
Sectional of WW1 No 5 Mills Bomb Grenade.
The term "Mills bomb" refers to a series of British hand grenades designed by William Mills. These grenades were the first modern fragmentation grenades adopted by the British Army and were extensively used during both the First and Second World Wars.
The initial version, known as the No. 5 Mk 1, featured a design where explosive material could be filled through a small circular plug on the upper half. The detonator assembly was inserted into the center tube from the bottom of the grenade body via the base plug. Tension for the striker and spring was maintained through the middle by a lever pressed down on lugs (ears) located on the top of the grenade body, secured by a split pin and ring referred to as the safety pin/pull ring. It was introduced in May 1915 and became widely available after mass production ramped up in 1916.
