*RARE: British, Stag Handle Bowie Knife and Sheath by J. Nowill & Sons Sheffield*

Approx Measurements: 40cm overall, 26.3cm blade (including ricasso), 23cm / 9" curved cutting blade,

Marked on ricasso: J. Nowill & Sons, Sheffield

This is an impressive original Large Bowie Knife made in Sheffield by J. Nowill & Sons. It has a perfect 9” long deep swept Bowie blade. The blade is a wonderful piece of craftsmanship with scalloped tool work along the spine of the blade and a blood groove.  The ricasso is stamped with the Knife makers name ‘J. Nowill & Sons, Sheffield’. It has a white metal cross guard with ornate chased detail before the staghorn grip and it is complete with its brown leather sheath.

Inscribed on the blade is "J. Nowill & Sons, Sheffield, Star over D and Crossed Keys". This prestigious mark has its origins in the historical grant of a corporate mark, D*, by the Company of Cutlers on 27 April 1700, bestowed upon Thomas Nowill (c.1676-1704) as a distinguished "Maker of Knives." This mark was subsequently inherited by his sons. In 1842, J. Nowill & Sons was formally assigned the D* mark and an additional emblem that would gain significant recognition: the iconic 'CROSSKEYS.'
