~ Circa 2nd Century BC Greek Iberian Tetradrachm Coin#1 ~
During the 2nd century BC, the Iberian Peninsula was a cultural crossroads influenced by Greek, Phoenician, Carthaginian, and later Roman powers. The Greek–Iberian coinage reflects this blend, as local Iberian tribes adopted Hellenistic styles of coin design and production that had spread throughout the Mediterranean after the conquests of Alexander the Great.
Greek colonies such as Emporion (Empúries) and Rhode (Roses) on the eastern coast of Iberia were crucial trade centres. They introduced the concept of silver coinage to the region, which was quickly imitated by inland Iberian mints who produced hybrid coins—Greek in style but local in language and symbolism.
