*Hungarian/Romanian, AKM Type 1 Knife Bayonet and Scabbard*

Approximate Measurements:
14.6cm blade, 28cm overall
Arabic text on insulator

This example features a reddish-brown composite grip and a black steel Type I scabbard with a reddish-brown rubber insulator and a tan leather retention strap. The reddish brown hilt suggests that this bayonet is Hungarian or Romanian, however the retaining strap indicates that this is Hungarian. Hungarian bayonets are unique due to their separate hilt strap and belt loop. Often, these bayonets retain the hilt strap but lack the belt loop, as is the case here.

The AKM Type I bayonet was introduced with the AKM rifle in 1960, marking a significant evolution in bayonet design. It featured a one-piece molded plastic grip and pommel and a stainless steel blade, making it resistant to corrosion. The bayonet's clip-point blade with sawteeth could be combined with the steel scabbard to function as a wire cutter, and the scabbard's rubber insulator allowed for the safe cutting of electrified wires. This revolutionary design remains influential in modern bayonet development.
