WWII German Zt.Z.S/30Fg - Zeitzunder 30 Sekunden mit Fliegewicht. Dated 1944 with makers code "jqb" and Nazi Waffen acceptance stamp. These large fuses were used on a variety big Flak guns including the infamous "88" and Flak 10.5cm guns.
The 8.8 cm Flak 18/36/37/41 was a versatile German 88 mm artillery gun used extensively during World War II as both an anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapon. Renowned for its effectiveness, it became one of the most iconic weapons of the conflict. The development of the initial model spawned a series of improved variants.
The term "Flak 88" refers to this family of guns, beginning with the original 8.8 cm Flak 18, followed by the enhanced 8.8 cm Flak 36 and later the 8.8 cm Flak 37. The designation "Flak" is an abbreviation of the German word "Flugzeugabwehrkanone", meaning "aircraft-defense cannon," reflecting the weapon's primary design purpose.
Over time, "flak" entered the English lexicon as a general term for anti-aircraft fire. Among German soldiers, the weapon was colloquially known as the "Acht-acht" ("eight-eight"), while Allied forces referred to it simply as the "eighty-eight" due to its calibre.
