*German, WW2, Police Dress Bayonet (Seitengewehr), with Scabbard & Frog*

A German WWII period Police dress bayonet (Polizei-Seitengewehr), complete with its correct blackened steel scabbard and original leather frog. The bayonet features a bright, single-fullered spear-point blade, fitted with stag-horn grip plates secured by domed rivets. The obverse grip bears the correct nickel-silver Polizei eagle clutching a wreath enclosing a swastika. The hilt mounts are nickel-silver, comprising an eagle-head pommel with functioning press-stud locking mechanism, chequered backstrap, and a decorative down-turned quillon with foliate engraving. The scabbard is of blackened steel with nickel-silver throat and ball-finial chape, and retains correct proportions and fittings. The leather frog is a period example, correctly shaped for Police dress bayonets and intended for wear on the service belt with walking-out or parade uniform.

Approx. Measurements - Blade length: 32.4cm, Overall length: 44.3cm

Historical Note:
Police dress bayonets were introduced following the 1936 reorganisation of the German police under Heinrich Himmler, when the various state, municipal, and regional forces were consolidated into the Ordnungspolizei. These bayonets served as ceremonial sidearms, worn by uniformed Schutzpolizei and other Ordnungspolizei personnel for parade, guard, and formal duties, including wear with the walking-out (evening dress) uniform.

Although never intended for attachment to a rifle, these pieces are correctly classified as Seitengewehre (service bayonets) rather than daggers. German uniform regulations required uniformed state officials to wear a sidearm with dress uniform, a tradition extending back several centuries. The police dress bayonet represents a symbolic continuation of the military service bayonet, derived in form from the Seitengewehr 98 but adapted exclusively for ceremonial use, emphasising authority and tradition rather than combat function.

*Condition*
Very good overall condition for a complete Police dress bayonet set. The blade remains bright with light age-related spotting and handling marks. The stag grips are well matched with natural colour and character, showing no cracks or losses. Hilt fittings retain good detail with honest wear to high points. The scabbard shows surface wear and oxidation consistent with age, with thinning to the original blackened finish and scattered rust spotting. The nickel-silver chape exhibits minor dents and small impact marks, including light marking to the ball finial, all commensurate with period use. The leather frog is original and complete, showing surface wear, dryness, edge wear, and cracking at stress points consistent with long-term service use, but remains structurally sound and displayable. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Complete German WWII Ordnungspolizei dress bayonet with scabbard and original frog, featuring stag grips and Police eagle hilt fittings.
