An original Third Reich Police Parade Bayonet (Polizei Seitengewehr) by E.D. Lüneschloss, Solingen. Bright 32.8 cm (12⅞ in) nickel-plated blade with full fuller and clear maker’s stamp “E.D. LÜNESCHLOSS SOLINGEN.” The nickel-plated hilt displays fine oak-leaf engraving to the cross-guard and a characteristic eagle-head pommel, retaining much original finish. Grips of genuine stag-horn are well matched in tone, inset with the silvered police eagle and wreath emblem.
The reverse cross-guard bears the unit marking “S.D.I. 271”, corresponding to the Schutzpolizei Dienst, I District (Protection Police, 1st Administrative District), the following numerals denoting the individual weapon inventory number. The matching scabbard throat is similarly marked “S.D.I. 484,” indicating issue within the same district armoury but to a different officer. The scabbard retains its black leather body with plated fittings and a small stamped K inspection mark near the frog stud.
Historical Note:
Police dress bayonets were introduced following the re-organisation of the Ordnungspolizei under Himmler in 1936, serving as ceremonial sidearms for full-time uniformed Schutzpolizei officers. The basic form derived from the old Seitengewehr 98 pattern but was purely decorative, worn on parade and formal duties. The S.D. prefix identifies the Schutzpolizei (municipal police), the Roman numeral the district, and the sequential number the individual weapon in inventory.
E.D. Lüneschloss was among Solingen’s premier suppliers, renowned for high-quality plating and crisp detailing. Surviving examples with clearly struck unit numbers are particularly desirable to collectors of police regalia, as they offer direct traceability to specific organisational formations.
