A fine original watercolour painting of a Monmouth class cruiser by the renowned maritime artist William Lionel Wyllie.

The Monmouth class was a ten-ship class of 10,000-ton armoured cruisers built around 1901 to 1903 for the Royal Navy and designed
specifically for commerce protection.

The ships were also referred to as County-class cruisers as they carried the names of British counties, but should not be confused with
the county-class cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the years between the First and Second World Wars.

The ship is painted at sea near a shoreline or maybe a spit. To the background is a smaller two funnelled cruiser and some sailing
boats.

As with all of Wyllies work, the painting is beautifully executed and accurate in detail.

The painting is signed by the artist in the bottom right hand corner.

The painting is mounted and presented in a glazed wood frame.

~ Dimensions ~

The painting measures 42cm (16 ½ inches) by 70.5cm (27 ¾ inches).

The frame measures 65.5cm (25 ¾ inches) by 94cm (37 inches).

It weighs 4.55 Kg.

~ Condition ~

There is some foxing to the left hand side of the painting but otherwise it is in a really nice condition with no fading, staining or
damage.

For some reason the mount has been split in the middle but this does not affect the painting.

The frame is in good order, though the back board is a little warped and partially taped, so this may need replacing. There are also a
few small holes to the frame and mount, wood worm probably but old and not a concern.

William Lionel Wyllie (5 July 1851 – 6 April 1931) was a prolific English painter of maritime themes in both oils and watercolours. He has been described as 'the most distinguished marine artist of his day'.
His work is in the Tate, the Royal Academy, the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and many other institutions around the world.
