*German, WW2, Luftwaffe Mess Spoon, Rostfreier Stahl Stainless Steel, Eagle Property Mark*

An original Second World War German Luftwaffe mess spoon manufactured in stainless steel and bearing the Luftwaffe property acceptance mark. The spoon follows the standard wartime military pattern with a broad oval bowl and gently tapering handle designed for durability and practical field use.

Stamped to the handle is the Luftwaffe eagle clutching a swastika, the official property mark used on equipment issued to the German Air Force. This stamp confirmed the item as Luftwaffe service property rather than that of the Heer (Army) or Kriegsmarine.

The reverse of the handle is clearly marked “ROSTFREIER STAHL”, meaning “rust-free steel,” indicating stainless steel construction. This marking was widely used on German military cutlery during the war and reflects the move toward durable corrosion-resistant materials suitable for field conditions and repeated use in barracks and field kitchens.

The spoon displays the plain utilitarian design typical of wartime German military mess equipment. Such utensils were produced in large numbers by various contracted manufacturers and issued for everyday use by Luftwaffe personnel both in barracks and in operational environments. Many examples carry only the material mark rather than a maker’s name, as seen here.

Approx. Measurements – Overall length: 20.5 cm.

Historical Note:
During the Second World War the Luftwaffe maintained extensive infrastructure including airfields, training bases, barracks, and field units spread across occupied Europe. Feeding large numbers of personnel required robust and easily produced dining equipment. Stainless steel utensils such as this spoon formed part of standard issue mess kits used by aircrew, ground staff, and administrative personnel alike.

Unlike ceremonial or dress items, these pieces represent the everyday material culture of wartime service. Their simple construction and official property markings ensured durability and traceability within the military supply system, making surviving examples tangible reminders of daily life within the German armed forces.

*Condition*
Good original condition showing honest service wear consistent with use. The Luftwaffe eagle property mark remains clear and well defined, and the “Rostfreier Stahl” marking is still legible. Light surface scratching and age patina are present as expected for a wartime field utensil. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
