*British, WWII, Royal Marines Sweetheart Brooch, Sterling Silver, by J.R. Gaunt & Son*
A fine Royal Marines sweetheart brooch, crafted in sterling silver by the renowned insignia manufacturer J.R. Gaunt & Son. The brooch measures 2.5cm x 3.5cm and features the distinctive globe-and-laurel emblem surmounted by a Kings crown. The globe is finely detailed with engraved continents and gridlines, surrounded by a laurel wreath symbolising victory and honour.
The reverse is stamped “STERLING” together with the maker’s mark J.R.G&S (J.R. Gaunt & Son). Fitted with its original period pin fastening.
Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were popular keepsakes during both world wars, gifted by servicemen to wives, fiancées, and family members as a token of affection and loyalty. The Royal Marines’ emblem — a globe encircled by laurel wreath and surmounted by a naval crown — has been in use since 1827 and represents the Corps’ worldwide service and naval heritage.
During the Second World War, the Royal Marines served at sea, in amphibious landings, and as commandos in theatres ranging from Norway and the Mediterranean to the D-Day landings and the Pacific. Brooches such as this were sold through jewellers and regimental outfitters, with Gaunt & Son producing some of the finest-quality silver insignia and sweetheart jewellery.
