*British, WW1, Silver War Badge - Issue No. B39156*

Original British First World War Silver War Badge bearing the reverse issue number B39156, complete with King's Crown and the distinctive circular inscription "FOR KING AND EMPIRE – SERVICES RENDERED" surrounding the crowned GR royal cypher. Measuring approximately 3.9cm in diameter, this is a classic early issue example retaining its original reverse pin fitting and engraved issue number.

Instituted in September 1916, the Silver War Badge was awarded to servicemen who had been honourably discharged due to wounds or sickness incurred during military service. Its purpose was practical as much as symbolic; worn on civilian clothing, it identified the recipient as a veteran who had fulfilled his duty and prevented wounded or medically discharged men from being wrongly accused of avoiding service during wartime. These badges became a familiar sight throughout Britain during and immediately after the Great War.

The engraved reverse number B39156 falls within the early issue system used during the First World War. Individually numbered badges such as this can often be researched through surviving Silver War Badge Rolls, allowing many examples to be linked directly to named soldiers and their wartime service records. As an unresearched example, it still offers considerable scope for future investigation.
