~ British George VIth Territorial Service Medal ~

The British George VI Territorial Service Medal, formally known as the Territorial Efficiency Medal, was awarded during the reign of George VI to recognise long and efficient service in the Territorial Army. It represented dedication rather than battlefield heroics, honouring the commitment of part-time soldiers who balanced civilian life with military obligation.

Instituted originally in 1908 and continued under successive monarchs, the George VI issue was awarded from 1937 to 1952. To qualify, recipients were typically required to complete 12 years of efficient service, though this requirement was often reduced during wartime, particularly throughout the Second World War, when the Territorial Army played a vital role in home defence, training, and overseas operations.

The medal is distinguished by its obverse portrait of King George VI, surrounded by a Latin inscription denoting his royal titles. The reverse bears a laurel wreath encircling the words “TERRITORIAL EFFICIENCY MEDAL”, symbolising endurance, loyalty, and merit. It was suspended from a green ribbon with yellow edges, and additional qualifying service could be recognised by the award of clasps.

The medal is not named.
