*WW2, c.1942, Original, British Sten Mk.1 Machine Carbine Socket Bayonet (Sten Spike) and Scabbard*

This rare original Sten Mk. I Socket bayonet, also known as the Sten Spike, was designed for the 9 mm Sten Mk. II submachine gun during World War II. It was introduced in 1942 and could only be used with the Mark II Sten due to its unique socket design that fit inside the gun's barrel nut, held securely in place by a spring along the top. Made from sheet steel, it featured a rod-style blade inspired by the No. 4 Mk. II socket bayonet, albeit with a larger diameter, allowing it to use the existing No. 4 scabbard. The STEN Mk. I bayonet was exceptionally simple in design, representing the essence of World War II bayonet simplicity.

This bayonet is a rare find today. Around 75,280 of these bayonets were produced between 1943 and 1944, with most being scrapped. B. & J. Sippel Ltd., a German company owned by two Jewish brothers, that relocated to Sheffield in 1931, manufactured the sheet steel components. The socket is marked "B&JSL" and displays a possible broad arrow acceptance mark. The spike measures approximately 8" in length, 12" overall. The scabbard has no visible markings. The prominent forward projection on the spring steel catch also serves as a finger guard, allowing the bayonet to be used as a hand weapon.
