~ WW1 Cast Bronze Memorial Plaque – Name Removed ~

Variously known as a Memorial Plaque, a Death Plaque or Dead Man’s Penny, these cast bronze plaques were issued after the First World War to the next-of-kin of all British Empire service personnel who were killed as a result of the war.

The plaque features an image of Britannia holding a trident in one hand and an olive wreath in the other above the ansate tablet which would bear the deceased’s name.

Two dolphins swim around Britannia, symbolizing Britain’s sea power.

A lion stands at Britannia’s feet and to the bottom a second smaller lion is tearing apart the German eagle.

Around the picture the legend reads “He died for freedom and honour”,

The reverse is blank.

In this instance the name of the soldier has been scratched away.

The plaque has a diameter of 12cm (4 ¾ inches).

It weighs 285g

~ Condition ~

The plaque is in decent condition with some associated age wear.
