An antique sword stick of elegant proportions, measuring 90 cm overall, with a 42.2 cm steel blade and 61.6 cm unsheathed length. The handle is of embossed brass with a spiralling foliate design, topped with a bone and wooden knop. The shaft and grip are fashioned from black-painted hardwood, fitted with brass collar mounts and a steel ferrule. The collar incorporates a concealed push-button release mechanism, now faulty, allowing the single-edged, sharpened blade to be drawn freely.

Historical Note:
Sword sticks (or cane swords) became popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries as discreet self-defence weapons carried by gentlemen. While they often doubled as walking sticks, their concealed blades provided protection at a time when street robbery and duelling culture persisted. This example, with its brass embossed handle and decorative knop, reflects the period’s fusion of practicality and ornamentation. The inclusion of a release mechanism suggests manufacture in the later 19th century, when such refinements became common.

*Condition*
The blade shows surface pitting and age-related tarnishing but retains its single-edged sharpened profile. The release mechanism is present though no longer functioning as intended, and the sword can be withdrawn without use of the button. The brass handle and fittings show expected wear with light patination, while the hardwood shaft displays minor surface marks and old refinishing.
