This is 1 of 50 the long land pattern Brown Bess muskets made by Freeman. This one is the last one made being stamped on the lockplate ‘Freeman 50’.

The grip bears a brass cartouche reading ‘M50’, indicating that it is a limited series.

The reverse of the wooden stock butt is marked ‘IH’.

The barrel is stamped on the top left with three proof marks and on its top, the stamp reads ’50 Freeman London’.

The butt plate, trigger guard and ram rod sleeves are made of brass. All the other metal elements of the musket are of steel.

Also referred to as the 1st Model, this musket was the first of British muskets to adopt brass hardware. Developed in the 1720s, this musket was used all the way up to the American Revolution. There a number of versions to this musket.

Our example dates back to 1740-41 and comes from the Earl of Macclesfield estate.

~ Dimensions ~

The barrel is 46 inches (120 cm) and the overall length of it is 62 ½ inches (159 cm).

It weighs 4.6 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The musket is in very good condition.

It half cocks, cocks and dry fires.

The piece was cared of and the bore remains excellent, free of damage or rust.

The metalwork in general is damage free as is the woodwork.
