This is a 100% inert 30mm for the GAU-8 Avenger used in the A-10 Thunderbolt II (Warthog).
The 30mm x 173 GAU-8/A ammunition has proven combat effectiveness against a range of targets, including tanks, armoured vehicles, and light vehicles. This ammunition family includes PGU-13/B High Explosive Incendiary (HEI), PGU-14/B Armor-Piercing Incendiary (API), and PGU-15/B Target Practice (TP) rounds. It has been used in the GAU-8/A Gatling Gun, the Goalkeeper CIWS, and the Bushmaster II. The GAU-8/A ammunition was among the most effective used during Operation Desert Storm, demonstrating exceptional performance against various battlefield threats. Additionally, a lightweight 30mm ammunition family was developed to enhance the air-to-ground capabilities of the U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter and remains compatible with all 30mm x 113 gun systems.
The PGU-13/B HEI round delivers both fragmentation and incendiary effects, making it effective against personnel, trucks, ammunition depots, and other soft targets. It features a standard M505 fuse and an explosive mixture housed in a naturally fragmenting body, providing significant lethality against lighter vehicles and material targets.
