An outstanding Bowie knife dating from around 1850–1860, likely associated with the U.S. Civil War period, complete with a named and dated leather scabbard. The 22.5cm steel blade features a double-edged tip, complemented by an angular steel cross-guard, a stag horn grip, and a brass pommel. The stitched leather scabbard is fitted with a steel spring clip and a brass chape, while the belt strap is embossed with "LT. COL. R.W. LEWIS, 1857," adding a notable personal and historical touch.
Whilst there is no definitive record of a Lieutenant Colonel R.W. Lewis serving in 1857; it could refer to William Gaston Lewis: Born in 1835, he joined the U.S. Survey Corps in 1857 and later became a Confederate general during the American Civil War.
