~ U.S. Navy Flight Jacket, WW2 Era Leather, shearling collar, c. 1940s ~

This is an original U.S. Navy pilot’s leather flight jacket from the Second World War. Crafted from dark brown goatskin leather, it features a black mouton (sheepskin) fur collar, wool knit cuffs and waistband, and a sturdy Talon zipper front. Two large front flap pockets with button closures provided both utility and warmth in the cockpit.

Issued to U.S. Navy and Marine aviators, these jackets were designed for durability and comfort during long missions over the sea. Their heavy leather construction offered protection against wind and cold at altitude, while the snug waist and wrist knits prevented drafts in unheated aircraft.

Unlike the Army Air Force’s famous A-2 jacket, Navy jackets such as the M-422 and its later variants (M-422A, AN-6552, and G-1) featured the distinctive fur collar, making them instantly recognizable symbols of American naval aviation.

Worn by pilots flying everything from carrier-based fighters to long-range patrol bombers, jackets like this became enduring icons of U.S. naval aviation heritage.

Our example is a G-1. The label reads:
