*Tall Hand-Carved Walking Stick with Woodcock Bird Terminal, Signed Ian James, 145cm*

A finely hand-carved walking stick featuring a woodcock bird head terminal, realistically rendered with carved and pyrographed plumage with naturalistic colouration and the species’ distinctive long beak. The shaft is of natural uneven width, retaining a rustic charm, and bears the carved and inked initials of the maker, Ian James. At 145cm in length, this is an imposing and highly decorative stick, at once practical and collectible.

Historical Note
Ian James is a Welsh stick-carver, active from the early 2000s to the present, widely regarded as one of Britain’s foremost makers of carved animal and bird-head sticks. His work is featured in Stickmaking: A Complete Course by Andrew Jones & Clive George (2008), and he is regularly seen at stick-making demonstrations and country fairs. James’ naturalistic style, particularly his game bird carvings, has made his work both recognisable and sought after among collectors.

The woodcock has long held sporting and cultural associations in Britain, making it a fitting subject for a country stick. Sticks such as this combine artistry with field tradition, standing as both tools and works of rural folk art.

*Condition*
The stick remains in excellent condition, with a strong shaft and crisp carving. The painted detail to the bird’s head is well preserved. One natural hole is present on the shaft, clearly shown in the photographs. Overall, the surface retains a pleasing polish and presents very well. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
