*Scotland, Boer War c.1899–1902, Royal Scots Reserve Slouch Hat Badge, Silver*
An original Boer War period slouch hat badge of the Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment), produced for reserve or militia service during the South African War. Die-struck in solid silver and depicting the regimental thistle within laurel wreath with plume tail, this compact field-service pattern was worn on the slouch hats adopted by British infantry units on campaign. The badge measures approximately 3 × 3.5 cm and is fitted with its correct twin-loop reverse and separate brass hairpin fastener.
Historical Note: During the Second Boer War, reserve battalions of the Royal Scots served extensively in South Africa, adopting practical slouch hats in place of traditional headwear. Badges of this form were privately produced in small numbers, often in silver, and were not routinely hallmarked. Surviving examples with original hairpins are increasingly scarce.
*Condition* Good original condition, with honest age toning and service wear. No hallmarks visible, as typical for period military silver. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
