This is an excellent, weighty, replica of one of the most iconic swords of the early 19th century, the 1796 Pattern light cavalry sabre.
The Pattern 1796 light cavalry sabre was primarily used by British light dragoons, hussars, and the King’s German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. It was also adopted by the Prussians (as the 1811 pattern or “Blücher sabre”) and used by Portuguese, Spanish, and Indian cavalry into the early 20th century. The sabre’s pronounced curve facilitated slashing attacks in cavalry actions. Its blade widened near the point, enhancing its effectiveness in slashes, though at the cost of balance. This design made it easier to use than the heavier Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry Sword and allowed it to be wielded by all cavalrymen, not just the largest and strongest.
