~ Late 19th Century Victorian Majolica Acanthus Leaf Chamberstick  ~

A delightful and richly glazed Victorian majolica chamberstick — a personal bedside or chamber candleholder — modelled with great naturalistic verve as a spreading acanthus leaf. The broad, flat base is formed as a boldly moulded acanthus leaf in full relief, with deeply cut lobes and veins highlighted by a lustrous, varying green glaze that moves from bright bottle green on the raised surfaces to deep near-black in the shadowed recesses, creating a remarkably vivid and three-dimensional effect. The curling stem at one end forms a practical finger-loop handle, itself modelled as a rolled leaf tendril. The candle socket rises centrally from the leaf base, modelled as a fluted tulip or flower cup with a lobed and scalloped rim, glazed in warm ochre and buff tones with darker brown mottling and crazing — contrasting beautifully with the surrounding green.
The underside (image 6) is fully glazed in green throughout, with a circular foot ring glazed internally in a lighter, mottled green. No maker's mark is visible, consistent with the majority of English majolica production at this level.

~ Historical Context ~
Victorian majolica was made between 1849 and 1900: typically relief-moulded, vibrantly coloured, used for everything from utilitarian items to decorative showpieces — always stylistically naturalistic and in step with contemporary fashion.
Chambersticks were essential personal accessories in the pre-electric Victorian home. Small and portable, they were designed to be carried by hand at night — the flat drip-pan base catching wax, the finger-loop allowing safe carriage — and were placed in bedrooms and hallways to light the way at night. Chambermaids would collect and clean them each morning.
The acanthus leaf was one of the Victorian era's favourite naturalistic motifs, rooted in classical Greek and Roman design and widely revived across all the decorative arts of the period. Majolica acanthus chambersticks were produced by numerous English manufacturers throughout the 1870s and 1890s — both as individual pieces and in pairs — and were popular as bedroom accessories combining practical function with decorative charm. This example, with its confident modelling and richly varied green glaze, is a pleasing and characteristic example of the type, dating to circa 1875–1895.

Condition
This chamberstick is in good, sound condition throughout:

Glaze — the green glaze on the leaf base is richly preserved and in excellent overall condition, with no chips or cracks noted to the main body
Socket — the ochre candle socket shows normal crazing to the glaze, consistent with age and heat from candle use, but is structurally intact
Handle loop — intact and undamaged
Underside — cleanly glazed throughout; the foot ring shows minor age wear and surface dirt
No maker's mark visible — typical for English majolica of this type and period
Overall — this is a sound, displayable and usable piece in honest antique condition with no significant damage to report
