This is a well marked example of a Martini Henry Sword Bayonet.

This example has a straight blade with a fish skin grip. The scabbard is of black leather with metal endings.

The crosspiece has a shooting hole on one side and is marked with the serial number “831” in the centre.

The ricasso bears the manufacturer`s mark “Wilkinson Sword Company London”, the “Crown over V.R.” imperial stamp and “89” beneath it.

The other side bears the acceptance mark “Two arrows pointing in to one another” and the “W Arrow D” War Department acceptance mark. Below is marked “F.A.3.98”.

The blade back shows “Crown over 4.9 over W” twice.

The top of the scabbard bears the serial number “6828”.

~ Dimensions ~

The blade is 18 inches (46 cm) long and the overall length is 24 ½ inches (62 cm).

The piece weighs 1.04 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The chape shows a minor dent and there is some pitting across the steel work.

The blade edge is blunt but the safety trigger works.

There is some darkening to the blade and minor chips but overall the item presents well.
