~ Large Oil Painting Of General Brownrigg, Crimean War Veteran By J Henderson ~

Here we have a wonderful oil on canvas portrait of  Colonel John Studholme Brownrigg, a career soldier with a career spanning four decades.

Beginning his career in 1832 as an Ensign in the 9th Norfolk Regiment before moving to the 2Nd West India for just a year in 1842 Brownrigg was a rising star in the military and was quickly snapped up for a Captaincy in the Grenadier Guards.

During his time in the Guards he served and was promoted duly and by the time of his service in the Crimean War he was a Colonel of the Guards, fighting in battle alongside his regiment at Alma, Inkermann and Sevastapol but also serving with the Adjutant General Brigadier General James Bucknall Bucknall Estcourt.

In the Crimea Brownrigg was photographed by Roger Fenton a few times.

The life size portrait is painted from the waist up of Brownrigg in either a civilian coat or possibly an undress frock, at the time of painting given his age he may have been unattached to a regiment which occurred after the Crimea.

The portrait is by J Henderson, a famous artist most famous for his marine art but also for his portraits.
