~ Christiana P. Ross Oil Portrait of a Lady 1877 ~

A nicely painted oil portrait of a lady, dated 1877 by the English painter Christina Paterson Ross R.S.W. (1843 1906).

Christiana P. Ross was a sister to the painter Joseph Thorburn Ross.  She was born at Berwick-upon-Tweed but based in Edinburgh for most of her career. She painted interiors, still life and genre pictures working mainly in watercolours.

The painting depicts a lady of early to middle age, painted almost in profile in typical Victorian dress on a graduated green ground.

The painting is signed ‘C.P.Ross’ and dated 1877.

It is presented in a period ornate, gilt frame.

The image measures 22cm (8 ½ inches) by 29cm (11 ½ inches).

The frame measures 31cm (12 ¼ inches) by 38.5cm (15 ¼ inches).

~ Condition ~

There is some cracking of the paint from age but otherwise the painting is in very good condition.

The frame has a little age wear but is in generally good order.
