*Indonesian, Kris (Keris) Dagger, with Carved Wooden Hilt and Decorated Brass Sheath*
Approximate Dimensions: Overall length (sheathed): ~49 cm
Blade length: ~32.5 cm
Estimated Date: Early to mid-20th century Region: Java or Bali, Indonesia
A traditional Indonesian kris (keris) dagger, likely Javanese or Balinese in origin, featuring a striking straight (lurus) pamor-patterned blade. The pamor — created through traditional pattern-welding techniques — is visible along the entire length and provides a beautifully layered steel grain.
The hilt is ornately carved from a rich, dark wood, displaying traditional scrolling motifs and curved ergonomics typical of central Javanese craftsmanship. The base of the hilt is fitted with a decorative brass mendak (ring), adding a touch of refinement to the overall profile. The warangka (upper scabbard) is of the boat-paddle type and carved from matching hardwood with sweeping curves and rich patina.
The gandar (lower sheath) is fully clad in engraved brass, featuring finely detailed foliate and vine motifs in high relief — a traditional design often associated with Central Java or Bali.
*Condition*
The blade remains in good condition with clearly defined pamor. The wooden hilt and warangka show minor wear consistent with age. The brass mendak is intact. However, the wooden underlying scabbard has a split rear edge and can be detached from the brass outer covering. The brass casing itself is complete and remains decorative. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
