*Indo-Afghan Jezail Flintlock Musket with Decorated Stock and Silver Wire Bands, Obsolete Calibre*

A striking Indo-Afghan Jezail flintlock musket, c. 19th century, notable for its long, elegant form and regional craftsmanship. This example features a round barrel measuring approximately 122cm in length and 1.6cm at the muzzle, set into a deeply carved wooden full stock with floral and vine motifs. The stock is further embellished with decorative bone inlays and fitted with iron furniture.

The barrel is secured with multiple decorative silver wire bands, a characteristic traditional aesthetic. The barrel bears three diamond-shaped floral stamps and a rectangular mark with script, typical of local Khyber or Afghan workshop marks rather than formal European proofs.

The musket is missing its ramrod and shows honest signs of age and use, including stock cracks, surface wear, and repairs. It cocks and dry fires correctly and is of an obsolete large bore calibre, making it classifiable as an antique under most firearm laws.

Dimensions:
Overall length: approx. 152 cm
Barrel length: approx. 122 cm
Barrel diameter at muzzle: approx. 1.6 cm

Historical background:
The term jezail refers to a distinctive type of long, muzzle-loading firearm traditionally made and used throughout Afghanistan and the North-West Frontier region in the 18th and 19th centuries. Characterised by their long barrels, often elaborately decorated stocks, and curved butts designed to rest on walls or saddles, jezails were prized for their range and accuracy. They were famously employed by Afghan tribesmen during the Anglo-Afghan Wars, where they proved highly effective against British forces. Often featuring a mix of locally forged barrels and European lock mechanisms, these rifles reflect a unique fusion of local craftsmanship and adapted technology.

*Condition*
The stock displays multiple age-related cracks and repairs, particularly near the barrel bands and butt. Losses to decorative inlays are visible, and the butt shows edge wear and old splitting. Barrel surface exhibits pitting consistent with age. No ramrod present. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.

Note: The marks on the barrel are regional decorative and workshop stamps, not attributable to a specific named maker.
