*Imperial German, WW1, Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse),  Magnetic Core*

Imperial German Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse), official issue type, of three-piece construction with magnetic iron core and silver frame. The obverse features the Imperial crown above a Gothic “W” monogram and the date “1914.” The reverse retains its original pinback assembly with broad tapering pin, solid hinge block, and soldered “C” catch typical of wartime issue examples. The core retains much of its original black lacquered finish, while the frame has developed a pleasing even patina. Measures approximately 4.6 cm across.

Historical Note:
Re-instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II at the outbreak of the First World War on 5 August 1914, the Iron Cross continued the Prussian award tradition first established in 1813. The decoration was granted for bravery and leadership in the field, regardless of rank, and came in two grades—2nd Class (worn on ribbon) and 1st Class (pinback). This example is a regulation issue type, worn directly on the tunic above the left breast pocket. The magnetic core denotes a true wartime production piece, as later replacements and commemorative versions often used non-ferrous metals. Approximately 218,000 Iron Crosses 1st Class were awarded during the conflict, making it among the most recognisable decorations of Imperial Germany.

*Condition*
Light wear and age patina throughout. Black paint remains largely intact with minor rubbing on high points. Silver frame toned but complete; hinge, pin and catch all original and fully functional. No maker’s mark, as was common on issue-type crosses. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
