This rifle is a fine example of the renowned German Gewehr 1888, also known as the Gewehr 88 or GEW 88. Manufactured in 1890 at the Spandau Imperial Arsenal in Berlin, it boasts a rich history evidenced by numerous markings. Original German regimental markings adorn both bands, with the first crossed out "38.R.4.172" and the second "B.14.R.E.1.139," indicating "Reserve" regiments, denoted by the stylized "R."
Initially chambered for 7.92mm Patrone 88 ammunition with a fixed magazine, like most Gewehr 88 rifles, this example was converted to accommodate the 7.92×57mm Mauser S Patrone, evident from the "S" stamp above the chamber. The S Cartridge, with its Spitzer shape, offered superior ballistics, requiring modifications to the chamber to fit the thicker-walled shell casing. This rifle, designated as Gewehr 88/05 S, features notched plates welded to the rear of the receiver to accept 1905 pattern stripper clips, along with a distinctive "notch" cut into the rear of the receiver for clip loading.
The right side of the receiver bears the inscription "Gew. 88." in German blackface type, while above the chamber, it prominently displays "CROWN / SPANDAU / 1891," indicating manufacture at the Imperial Arsenal in Spandau. Serial number 3968 on the barrel, along with different numbers on other components, suggests refurbishment at contemporary arsenals, typical of rifles like this one that have seen considerable service.
