A superb EIIR-period British Royal Rifles officer’s sword, retaining its original white metal scabbard and displaying a richly etched Toledo-made blade in outstanding, near-mint condition. The sword shows minimal evidence of handling and is notable for the exceptional clarity and depth of its decorative work.
The 82 cm blade is finely etched on both faces with dense scrolling foliate ornament. One face bears the retailer’s mark Ammo & Company Ltd, surmounted by a martial trophy incorporating cannon, arms, and accoutrements. Above appears a Queen’s Crown over bugle horn, denoting Rifles regimental association, together with a blank cartouche beneath a crowned radiating motif. The etching remains crisp and bright, with no loss of detail.
The opposing face is marked Fábrica Bermejo, Toledo, Spain, and features elaborate foliate engraving throughout. A finely executed EIIR cypher appears beneath the crowned Royal Arms, framed by laurel and palm branches, with radiating rays above. The blade surface remains bright and clean with only the most minute factory or storage marks visible under close inspection.
The hilt is fitted with a polished nickel-plated steel guard, pierced with the Rifles bugle beneath the Queen’s Crown, all sharply defined and free from wear or distortion. Grip binding and components remain tight and undisturbed. The sword is accompanied by its original white metal scabbard, straight and mirror-bright, complete with suspension rings and showing virtually no wear.
Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 82 cm. Overall length: 97 cm.
Historical Note:
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, many British officers’ swords were produced by specialist Toledo workshops, whose centuries-old blade-making tradition made them a preferred source for high-quality ceremonial blades. Retailers such as Ammo & Company Ltd commissioned blades from makers including Fábrica Bermejo, combining Spanish craftsmanship with British regimental symbolism. Rifles officers’ swords are distinguished by the bugle horn motif, reflecting the regiment’s light infantry heritage and long-standing traditions.
