*Imperial German Export, Late 19th Century, Model 1866 Chassepot Pattern Yataghan Sword Bayonet, by Weyersberg, Solingen*
This is a German-manufactured Chassepot-pattern sword bayonet, produced by Weyersberg of Solingen for export markets, following the style of the French Model 1866 bayonet. Originally designed to accompany the Fusil d’Infanterie Modèle 1866 “Chassepot” rifle — named after its inventor Antoine Alphonse Chassepot — these bayonets were also later adapted to mount on the French M1874 Gras rifle. Notably, these German-made bayonets were produced not for use by French forces, but specifically for export to foreign armies who had acquired surplus or newly made Chassepot-type rifles — including various South American, Balkan, and other European forces after the Franco-Prussian War.
The blade retains the characteristic long yataghan shape, a style derived from the Turkish word yataghan meaning “one who lays down,” referring to the deeply swept, double-curve profile. This form improved rigidity while keeping the hilt and point aligned, providing both cutting power and thrusting efficiency.
This example measures approximately 57 cm blade length (69 cm overall) and features a brass ribbed hilt with integral muzzle ring and swept quillon. The ricasso is stamped with the crowned king’s head trademark of Weyersberg, Solingen — a mark confirming German production for export rather than French arsenal manufacture. The lack of French spine markings further supports this. The reverse ricasso shows a “G,” typically an inspector or factory controller mark at Solingen.
*Condition* The blade shows general dark peppery patina throughout, consistent with age, but retains its form and profile without major nicks. The brass grip displays age-related wear and small dents, providing a pleasing antique character. The iron crossguard and quillon have surface rust and old oxidation. Press stud mechanism works well. No scabbard included. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
