*German, WWII, Close Combat Clasp in Bronze, Peekhaus Design, FLL Manufacture*
Measurements: 9.7 cm long x 2.5 cm wide.
An original WWII German Close Combat Clasp (Nahkampfspange) in Bronze, measuring 9.7 cm long by 2.5 cm wide. The obverse displays the classic design of oak leaves with crossed stick grenade and bayonet to the centre, surmounted by the Wehrmacht eagle and swastika. This example retains its correct magnetic centre plate, an important detail confirming wartime manufacture. The reverse is marked “Fec. W.E. Peekhaus Berlin” (designer) and FLL within three small circles (Friedrich Linden, Lüdenscheid). Fitted with its correct flat-topped pin, hinge, and catch, all intact and functional.
Historical Note:
The Close Combat Clasp was instituted on 25 November 1942 as one of the most prestigious combat decorations of the Third Reich, awarded exclusively for hand-to-hand fighting. Issued in three grades—Bronze for 15 combat days, Silver for 30, and Gold for 50—it quickly became one of the most respected awards a soldier could earn.
All clasps were designed by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus of Berlin, whose name appears on the reverse. Production was carried out by several licensed manufacturers, the most prolific being Friedrich Linden (FLL), Josef Feix & Söhne (JFS), and AWS, Gablonz, with minor production by Juncker.
*Condition*
This clasp remains in good original condition, showing honest age and wear. Much of the bronze wash finish is present, with light darkening and patina consistent with service and storage. The detail to the oak leaves, eagle, and central weapons motif remains clear and sharp. The reverse displays clean, well-struck markings, with the Peekhaus and FLL stamps fully legible. The hinge, pin, and catch are correct and in working order. The magnetic centre plate confirms correct wartime construction. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
