*German, WW2, Luftschutz (Air Defense) Czech M34 Helmet with Two Mauser Decals, Stamped RL2 38/28*
A rare and intriguing example of a reissued Luftschutz (Air Defence) helmet from WWII, this piece offers collectors a glimpse into the varied and resourceful equipment used on the German home front, likely in the Mauser factory.
Originally a Czech M34 civil defense helmet, this model was repurposed by the Luftschutz during the early war years, a common practice as Germany reallocated captured or obsolete equipment. This example retains its original air vents and features a distinctive RL2 38/28 stamp inside the shell – identifying the manufacturer as Paul Diener, a metal pressing and stamping company located at Bernhardstraße 103 in Dresden, Germany that produced metal goods under Luftschutz contract. The RL2 code was part of the Reichsluftschutzbund's procurement system used to trace suppliers.
Helmets like this - bearing the RL2-38/28 stamp are typically three-piece "Gladiator" style helmets, characterized by a separate crown and two side skirts, joined by a crimped seam. These helmets were commonly used by Luftschutz personnel, including air raid wardens and factory fire brigades, and were produced in large numbers during the late 1930s and early 1940s.
What makes this helmet particularly unusual is the presence of two Mauser factory decals, one on each side. This suggests the helmet may have been issued for use by air raid personnel within the Mauser factory, a common practice at large industrial sites during the war. These decals were likely added at the factory level (or by the helmet's owner) for identification or organizational purposes. However, Mauser logos on Luftschutz helmets are not known from period photographs or official documentation, making them an unusual and intriguing detail—but not a verified wartime feature.
