*German, WW2, Iron Cross 1st Class 1939 (Eisernes Kreuz 1) with Original Presentation Case*

A genuine German Second World War Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse 1939) complete with its original presentation case.

The decoration retains its classic three-piece construction, comprising a magnetic iron core finished in black paint, mounted within a separate silvered frame with fine beaded border. The obverse displays the central swastika and the date “1939” on the lower arm, marking the re-institution of the award during the Second World War by Adolf Hitler.

The reverse is plain and fitted with a long vertical pin and catch assembly, typical of wartime production examples. The hardware remains intact and functional.

The cross is accompanied by its original black leatherette presentation case, the lid decorated with the outline of the Iron Cross in white. Internally the case retains its cream silk lid lining, impressed with the shape of the cross, and a cream velvet base with recess for the pin.

Approx. Measurements – Cross width: 44 mm.

History Note:
The Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz) was one of Germany’s most famous military decorations, first established in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars by King Frederick William III of Prussia. It was later re-instituted in 1870, 1914, and again in 1939 at the beginning of the Second World War.

The Iron Cross 1st Class was awarded for acts of battlefield bravery and leadership. Unlike the 2nd Class, which was worn suspended from a ribbon, the 1st Class was worn as a pin-back breast decoration on the left side of the tunic.

Recipients had to first receive the Iron Cross 2nd Class before becoming eligible for the higher grade. During the Second World War approximately 300,000 Iron Cross 1st Class decorations were awarded across all branches of the German armed forces.

*Condition*
The cross remains in very good original condition. The iron core retains much of its original black finish with light age wear. The silvered frame shows mild patination consistent with age. The reverse pin and catch are intact and functional. The presentation case shows expected age wear externally with some light marks and minor staining to the interior lining. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
