*German, WW1, Dated 1916, Trench Art, St 222 Polte Magdeburg Artillery Shell Tobacco Jar, marked "Souvenir de France"*
This is an iconic piece of WW1 trench art. This 1916 Shell with its 1917 lid has been made into a Tobacco Jar, marked "Souvenir de France".
9cm diameter. 10.8cm height (including knob)
Base marked:
St 222, Polte Magdeburg, SP289, Nov 1916
Lid Marked:
St, Mar 1917, (the rest of the markings are obscured by the knob)
The case was produced at the Polte ammunition factory in Magdeburg, Germany. Sp289 is the Control/inspection mark for Patronenfabrik Polte Magdeburg. St - Stark (strong) means that the casing was strengthened. Casings until 1905 had thinner walls.
