Second pattern example of the M1884/98 knife bayonet used with the Mauser Gewehr 98. The second pattern represents the first new production M1884/98 bayonet. This example was made in 1917 by J. A. Henckels AG, Solingen. It carries the Royal Cypher of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia, who reigned from 1861–1888.
The first pattern of the M1884/98 bayonet originated from the adaptation of the older M1871/84 bayonet around 1905 for integration with the Gewehr 98 Rifle. Modifications involved eliminating the muzzle-ring and installing a lengthier pommel with the T-O mortise to accommodate the Gewehr 98’s cleaning rod. Subsequently, the M1884/98 was phased out in favor of the M1898/05 bayonet. However, in 1915, the Germans revisited the M1884/98 design to optimize their limited steel resources, resulting in the creation of the second pattern that we have here. The Wehrmacht in 1934 under the Third Reich, further evolved the WW1 Model 1884-98 bayonet (2nd type) when it became known as the K98 bayonet.
Zwilling J. A. Henckels AG, situated in Solingen, Germany, stands as a renowned German knife manufacturer. Established in June 1731 by Peter Henckels, it ranks among the largest and oldest producers of kitchen knives for both household and professional applications. With origins dating back to Johann Abraham Henckels (1771–1850), who rebranded the company under his own name during his leadership, it remains one of the world’s oldest operating firms.
