*George V 1897 Pattern Infantry Sword c1869 *

A George V infantry sword with copper wired shagreen grip and black basket hilt, with foliate decoration, the Royal coat of arms and crowned crest of George V (1910-36). 32.5" plain blade, the ricasso has a faded brass disc with the visible letters "oved" for "Proved" which may be the Wilkinson proofing mark. The spine back edge has the serial number 16592 and the sharp side what looks like the letter B. The serial number and the remaining brass proved mark suggests that this could have been made by Wilkinson Swords in 1869 - when they made 582 swords, serial numbered: 16116-16697.

The 1897 pattern infantry officers’ sword is a straight-bladed, three-quarter basket-hilted sword that has been the regulation sword for officers of the line infantry of the British Army from 1897 to the present day.
