~ Early 1831 Model Napoleon III Era French Soldiers Short Sword ~

The French Infantry Briquet or Glaive M1831, “glaive des troupes à pied modèle 1831,” was known as  the “coupe choux” meaning “cabbage chopper”. It was not a popular weapon, being heavy and unwieldy and it tended to be used more as a field tool instead of as a weapon - as its nick-name suggests.

Original Model 1831 French Artillery Short Sword with scarce JEAN marking on blade.

Overall length if sword is approx. 25" with the blade measuring approx. 19"
Maker mark JEAN is one of the more scarce ones to find.

~ Condition ~

The blade has darkened over the years and has a reasonable amount of pitting as well as some light surface rust.

The grip has what looks like some battle damage just under the pommel.
