*Folk Art Walking Stick, Carved Miner with Tools, L 89cm*

Evocative folk art walking stick celebrating the miner’s trade – complete with helmeted figure, lamp, and carved tools.

A distinctive one-piece folk art walking stick, finely carved with the figure of a helmeted miner forming the handle. The miner’s face is detailed with inset nail eyes, while the helmet features a set-in glass “lamp” to the front. Below, the shaft is worked with intricate relief carvings depicting a miner’s pick, shovel, hammer, and lamp – the traditional tools of the trade. The stick has been hand-polished, showing the warm grain and natural texture of the wood. Length: 89cm.

Historical Note:
Mining-themed folk art is strongly associated with the communities and traditions of Britain and Europe in the late 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in areas where mining shaped local identity. Carved walking sticks such as this were often produced either by miners themselves during periods of rest or convalescence, or as commemorative pieces celebrating the mining profession. The inclusion of working tools reinforces the symbolism of solidarity, labour, and pride within mining heritage.

*Condition*
The stick is in solid condition, with expected light wear consistent with age. Minor chipping to the ferrule end and small surface knocks do not detract from its appeal. The glass lamp inset is intact, and carving remains sharp. A characterful and evocative example of mining-related folk art. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
