*British, WWII, Royal Air Force Mother-of-Pearl Sweetheart Brooch*

A charming WWII period Royal Air Force sweetheart brooch, circular in form, measuring 3cm in diameter. The front displays the RAF eagle and King’s Crown in relief above a blue enamel bar inscribed “ROYAL AIR FORCE”, all mounted on a mother-of-pearl backing within a white metal frame. The reverse retains its original pin fitting, now showing age-related oxidation.

Historical Note:
Sweetheart brooches were privately purchased items, worn by wives, mothers, and girlfriends of serving airmen to show their pride and support. Produced in a wide range of styles and materials from silver and enamel to mother-of-pearl, they were particularly popular during WWII as symbols of affection and connection across distance. The King’s Crown confirms manufacture prior to 1953, and the nacre setting is characteristic of 1930s–40s brooch fashion.

*Condition*
Good original condition with some age-related wear. The enamel bar remains bright, though minor surface wear is visible. Mother-of-pearl backing has a natural crack across the lower half, stable and not detracting from display. Reverse with typical oxidation and some corrosion to the pin mechanism, which remains intact but slightly bent. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
