A very popular “poker pistol” in its day, the Colt Derringer remains an iconic firearm. Less known than its later relative, the double up and under-barrel Model 95 Remington .41, the single barrel .41 calibre Colt First Model is a highly collectable firearm.

The original patent though was owned by Daniel Moore between 1861 and 1865 and it was for a single shot metallic cartridge .38 Rimfire derringer type pistol.

National Arms Company purchased the patent in 1865 and changed the calibre to .41 Rimfire.

Colt Arms Co. purchased the patent from the National Arms Company for manufacturing the piece in 1865 and 3 different models were sold up to 1912.

This First Model has been manufactured between 1870–1890 and it was a commercial success.

Our example is an excellent piece stamped “Colt” on the top of the barrel.

As seen in the pictures all stamps on it are still visible: the rider on the right-hand side of the brass frame and the “.41 CAL” on the left side.

The wooden walnut grips are original and attached together to the central frame by a middle screw.

The pistol cocks and releases with a strong spring.

It swivels right without issues, as intended by the manufacturer.

~ Dimensions ~

The barrel is 2 ½ inches (6.3 cm) long and the overall length of the piece is 5 inches (12.75 cm).

It weighs 210 grams.

~ Condition ~

The barrel has developed some minor surface rust inside but can be cleaned with ease. The rifling grooves seem to be intact.

The brasswork remains excellent as are the wooden grips.
