*European, Left-Hand Parrying Dagger (Main Gauche), Swept-Hilt Form, in the Style of c.1600*

A finely made piece, likely of Toledo origin, produced in the manner of a late Renaissance main gauche parrying dagger — the classic left-hand companion to the rapier. The dagger has a straight, double-edged blade of flattened diamond cross-section, measuring approximately 32.5 cm with an overall length of 42.7 cm. The hilt is of swept form, with recurved quillons and side rings terminating in decorative discs, intended to trap and control an opponent’s blade. The grip is wood bound with tightly twisted wire, surmounted by a large spherical pommel with turned finish for balance.

Historical Note:
The main gauche (“left hand”) formed an essential element of late Renaissance swordplay, paired with the rapier to provide both defence and counter-attack. Its wide guard and curled quillons allowed the fencer to parry thrusts, trap blades, and control close-quarters engagements. This form is illustrated in the great fencing treatises of the period, including Salvator Fabris’ Scienza d’Arme (1606) and Capo Ferro’s Gran Simulacro (1610), with similar designs also seen in the works of Marozzo (1536) and Thibault d’Anvers (1628). Such daggers were widely adopted across Italy, Spain, France, and the Low Countries during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

Condition:
Dark patina to blade and hilt, with surface pitting present throughout. Wire grip intact and secure. A decorative collector’s piece in sound, display-ready condition. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
