Here we have a non standard Victorian Sword from a Rifle regiment. The guard is in the gothic style used on the 1822 with a later ‘dumbbell’ thrusting blade added.
This sword can be dated with the blade style being implemented for infantry officers in 1892 but the required guard change only being implemented in 1895 making this sword one made for an officer in the three years after 1892.
The sword was made by Gaunt and Sons, a military outfitter famous for making everything from buttons to swords for the military, registered as a maker of ‘badges, medals and metal to the military’.
The guard is the steel bar design with the bugle insignia of the earlier models specifically for the rifle regiments. The grip is wire wrapped ray skin.
The scabbard is russet leather over brushed steel.
The sword has a peened construction and is very sturdy.

The sword and scabbard weigh 1.07 Kg.
The blade is 33 inches (84cm) long.
The guard is 6 inches (15 cm) long.
The guard is 5 inches (12 cm) deep.
~ Condition ~
The guards metal has ages as to be expected.
There is some damage to the ray skin grip.
The leather of the scabbard has worn but the construction is still solid.
The blade has some spots of blackening but is otherwise in good order.
