~ Chinese Pale Celadon Nephrite Jade Belt Hook in the Form of a Recumbent Dragon, Qing Dynasty, 18th to 19th Century ~

A finely worked jade belt hook, daigou, carved in pale celadon nephrite of exceptional quality and translucency, formed as an elongated recumbent dragon in the classic S-curve silhouette of the type. The hook proper is formed by the upturned dragon head at the uppermost end, with a small horn or crest projecting from the crown, incised facial features including the characteristic open-mouthed expression and almond-shaped eye, and a small chin beard or barbel element beneath the lower jaw. The curved neck of the hook sweeps back and downward, transitioning into the long, sinuous body of the dragon, which extends in a gently tapering form toward the pointed tail at the distal end. The body surface on the front face is smooth and highly polished, with a long flowing incised line suggesting the central ridge of the dragon's spine running the length of the piece. Subsidiary incised lines suggest a second creature element or the creature's own limb at an intermediate point along the body, with a small clawed foot or fin-like element indicated in low relief. The reverse of the piece is flat and smooth, with a raised oval boss or button positioned approximately one third of the way from the tail end, the standard attachment point that would allow the hook to be secured to a belt or garment. The piece has a small secondary notch or step near the button, consistent with the construction of functional period belt hooks. The stone is an exceptional pale celadon nephrite throughout, luminous and significantly translucent when held to light, approaching the quality of mutton-fat nephrite in the purity and warmth of its colour, which ranges from a cool near-white in the thinner sections to a warm pale yellow-green where the stone is thicker. A small natural black inclusion is visible within the body of the stone at one point. The surface carries a fine, well-established polish. Approximately 12 to 14 cm in overall length.

~ Historical Context ~

The belt hook, daigou or jikou, is one of the most ancient and culturally significant accessories in Chinese dress, with origins stretching back to the Warring States period (475 to 221 BC) when bronze and jade belt hooks became markers of elite status and refined personal presentation. Throughout the Han Dynasty, jade belt hooks reached a particularly refined expression, with the dragon form in pale nephrite among the most prestigious types produced. By the Qing Dynasty, jade belt hooks were produced in conscious reference to these earlier prestigious forms, serving simultaneously as functional dress accessories and as objects of scholarly and antiquarian appreciation. Their function was practical, serving to fasten robes, girdles, and attachments, while their material in nephrite jade elevated them far above purely utilitarian status.

The dragon form belt hook, with its sinuous body and upturned hooked head, is one of the earliest established jade hook types and carries particular prestige for its imperial and cosmological associations. The dragon represents celestial power, imperial authority and auspicious protection, making a jade dragon belt hook an object of layered significance for its wearer. Roseberys London have recently offered a comparable Chinese jade dragon belt hook of the Qing Dynasty 18th century with horned dragon head to shaft in a specialist sale, confirming continued strong collector and auction market engagement with this type.

The stone quality of this example, with its exceptional translucency and warm pale celadon colour approaching mutton-fat quality, places it in the upper tier of Qing period belt hooks and suggests it was produced for a person of considerable means and discernment.
