The Type 56 (56式突击步枪; literally "Assault Rifle, Model of 1956") is a Chinese 7.62×39mm automatic rifle, developed as a licensed copy of the Soviet AK-47, specifically the Type 3 variant. Initially adopted by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) as the "Type 1956 Submachine Gun," the Type 56 served primarily in the role of a submachine gun rather than a standard infantry rifle during its early years. Production began in 1956 at State Factory 66 and was later transferred to manufacturers Norinco and PolyTech.
The Type 56-1 variant, modeled after the Soviet AKS, features an under-folding steel shoulder stock and lacks a bayonet for easier portability. Like the original Type 56, it transitioned from a milled to a stamped receiver in the mid-1960s, making the Type 56-1 equivalent to the Russian AKMS.
