*c1800 India Pattern Flintlock Brown Bess Musket*

The United East India Company fielded its own armed forces and contracted for its own weapons and was one of the biggest private purchasers of military arms. This is an example of their 1790s infantry musket, known to collectors as the India Pattern or the Type-III Brown Bess, from its adoption by the British government as a stop-gap measure early in 1794 and its formal adoption in 1797 as less costly longarm. The lockplate is faintly marked at rear with the U, E and curve of the heart still clearly visible with a “4” on top and the date “18XX,” which is the likely contract date. The United East India Company logo had the letters UEIC placed in quadrants within a heart parted by a cross saltire and crested with 4 (United Company of Merchants of England trading to the East Indies).

The musket was the standard weapon issued to the British soldier throughout the 18th and early-19th centuries. It would be the India Pattern musket that would play a central and pivotal role in the wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. "Brown Bess" is a nickname of uncertain origin for the British Army's muzzle-loading smoothbore flintlock Land Pattern Musket and its derivatives. The musket design remained in use for over a hundred years with many incremental changes in its design. These versions include the Long Land Pattern, the Short Land Pattern, the India Pattern, the New Land Pattern Musket and the Sea Service Musket.

*Condition*
This is a lovely example of a Brown Bess with a great patina. It has possibly undergone some light refurbishment and has a small repair to the frizzon. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
