*Bulgarian, Cold War Era, Bulgarian People’s Army (БНА) Wool Service Greatcoat, Hristo Botev Factory Kalofer, Technical Branch Uniform Coat, Shoulder Patch, Small*

A Cold War era Bulgarian People’s Army wool service greatcoat retaining its original insignia, factory label and star-pattern military buttons. Constructed from heavy olive-green to brown wool, the coat follows the classic Eastern Bloc double-breasted greatcoat pattern designed for winter field and garrison wear during the socialist period.

The front is secured by twelve black military buttons each bearing a raised five-pointed socialist star, with two further matching buttons fitted to the rear waist adjustment strap. The coat features a deep skirt with rear vent to allow movement while maintaining warmth, along with long sleeve cuffs typical of Bulgarian winter uniform coats.

The shoulders retain plain red wool shoulder boards, while the collar carries black rectangular collar patches. Within the colour system used by the Bulgarian People’s Army, black collar tabs were generally associated with technical or support branches such as artillery, armoured troops, engineers or signal units, though the absence of branch devices prevents precise attribution.

The upper sleeve bears the standard Bulgarian People’s Army shield badge, displaying the initials “БНА” (Bulgarska Narodna Armiya) beneath a red socialist star together with the Bulgarian heraldic lion and national tricolour.

Internally the coat retains its original lining and factory label identifying the manufacturing facility responsible for its production.

The label reads:

ФАБРИКА
„ХР. БОТЕВ“
КАЛОФЕР

Translated as:
Factory “Hristo Botev”, Kalofer

The label also carries markings associated with the socialist-era state textile industry, including ДСО, referring to a Darzhavno Stopansko Obedinenie (State Economic Union), the government-run industrial organisation responsible for managing production within the Bulgarian command economy. The large red Roman numeral “I” denotes the Bulgarian military size system for Small.

The Hristo Botev textile factory in Kalofer, named after the Bulgarian revolutionary and national hero (1848–1876), was one of several state clothing factories responsible for producing uniforms for the Bulgarian armed forces during the Cold War period.

Approx. Measurements – Small; Shoulder width: 45 cm; Overall length (shoulder to hem): 105 cm; Adjustable Sleeves

Historical Note:
Following the establishment of the Bulgarian People’s Army (Българска народна армия – БНА) after the Second World War, Bulgaria aligned militarily with the Soviet Union and became a member of the Warsaw Pact in 1955. Uniforms adopted during this period reflected Soviet influence while retaining traditional Bulgarian national symbols such as the heraldic lion.

Heavy wool greatcoats such as this example formed a standard component of winter uniform for Bulgarian soldiers and technical personnel during the 1960s through the 1980s, providing protection during field exercises, guard duty and everyday garrison service.

Garments retaining original insignia and factory labels provide useful examples of Cold War Eastern Bloc military uniform production.
