*Imperial German, WW1, Iron Cross 1st Class, (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse), Excellent Condition*

A very good and completely original Imperial German First World War Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse), 1914 issue.  The silver frame shows crisp beading and correct Imperial details: crowned “W” cypher to the centre and “1914” date to the lower arm. The blackened core is of non-magnetic zinc/pot-metal, a desirable anti-corrosion construction frequently encountered.

Reverse retains its original period hardware: a soldered barrel hinge, robust round-wire catch, and tapered pin — all in excellent working order with no signs of repair. A clean, well-struck cross with strong relief and attractive patina to the silver frame.

Measurements: approx. 4.5 cm across

Historical Note:
The Iron Cross was re-instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 5 August 1914 as Germany entered the Great War, reviving a decoration first created by Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars. The 1st Class was awarded exclusively for repeated and proven battlefield bravery or outstanding command leadership, and represented an elite tier within German combat honours — typically worn at all times on the left breast pocket.

More than 5 million Iron Crosses 2nd Class were awarded in WW1, yet only around 218,000 1st Class awards were made by 1918 — making this grade significantly scarcer and reserved for those demonstrating continued distinguished service under fire.

*Condition*
Excellent original condition with crisp detail throughout, a fully functioning hinge and pin assembly, and no enamel loss or disturbance to the blackened core. Honest toning to the silver frame consistent with age. A strong and genuine example with no damage or repairs noted. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
