*British, WWII, Royal Navy HMS Woolwich Sweetheart Brooch, Gilt & Enamel*

A fine WWII-era Royal Navy sweetheart brooch for HMS Woolwich, measuring 4.6cm x 2.6cm. The badge is mounted to a gilt horizontal bar brooch fitting, with the ship’s crest at centre: a classical column against a deep blue enamel field, surmounted by the Naval Crown. The name scroll “H.M.S. Woolwich” is picked out in blue enamel below.

Historical Note:
HMS Woolwich was a Royal Navy destroyer depot ship, launched in 1934 and commissioned just prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. She served extensively during the conflict, providing repair, supply, and logistical support to destroyer flotillas in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean, allowing smaller warships to maintain operational readiness while away from established dockyards. After the war she continued in service until being sold out of the Navy in 1962.

Sweetheart brooches such as this were personal tokens, often presented by sailors to wives, mothers or fiancées as keepsakes during long periods of separation, and they remain evocative mementoes of wartime service at sea.

*Condition*
The brooch retains much of its original gilt finish and the enamel remains bright and intact, with only very minor surface wear. The reverse shows areas of tarnish and oxidation consistent with age, but it remains complete and functional. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
